Gail F. Schwartz MD

Gail F. Schwartz, MD, is a glaucoma specialist in private practice at Greater Baltimore Medical Center since 1996. She is also an Assistant Professor at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Originally from Philadelphia, Dr. Schwartz received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and served her internship in Internal Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital. She was Chief Resident in Ophthalmology in her last year of residency at the Krieger Eye Institute at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore and subsequently did a glaucoma fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute.

Dr. Schwartz has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award and Secretariat Award, and she has also recently received the Maryland Society for Eye Physicians & Surgeons President's Award. She served as a member and then Chair of the AAO Young Ophthalmologists Committee. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Maryland Society for Eye Physicians & Surgeons (Executive Board).

An active glaucoma researcher, Dr. Schwartz has contributed numerous articles in this field.



Raya Armaly, MD

A native of Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Armaly graduated magna cum laude from Duke University. During her college experience, she participated in the visiting student program at Princeton University studying political science. She received her doctorate of medicine from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Armaly completed her ophthalmology residency and fellowship in glaucoma at the George Washington University Hospital.

Following her training, Dr. Armaly worked in Washington, D.C. and was an assistant professor on staff at the George Washington University Hospital. She joined her husband, also a physician, in El Paso, Texas while he completed his active duty in the army. In El Paso, she practiced general ophthalmology and glaucoma consultation in a private practice and served as the glaucoma consultant to the William Beaumont Army Medical Center.

She then moved to Columbia, MD in to join the staff of the Columbia Medical Plan where she practiced general ophthalmology and served as their glaucoma consultant. During her eleven years on staff, she became well-respected by the physicians and patients and was voted into the top ten percent of physicians by a patient poll. Because of a desire to focus her practice solely on glaucoma treatment, she welcomed the opportunity to join Dr. Gail Schwartz in her private practice at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in December 2000.

Dr. Armaly is on staff and operates at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She is a clinical instructor at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Center and the University of Maryland and teaches residents at the GBMC eye clinic and in the operating room. She is a member of the American Glaucoma Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Maryland Society for Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
